Reading Pop Warner Cheerleading

Content

Pre-season:  Practices are expected to start the first week of August and will comprise of four days of no more than two hour practices.  Practices are located at the Reading Memorial High School stadium.  Practice times will be determined by availability of the stadium.  Pop Warner requires 10 hours of conditioning before and stunting or tumbling can take place.  The first few weeks will encompass conditioning, along with introduction/review of side-line cheers.  Although there is some flexibility in attendance during the month of August, it should be noted that the 10 hours of conditioning are a requirement.  This is also an important time for any cheerleader new to the sport or to Reading to learned the side-line aspect of cheering.

In-season:  As a Pop Warner rule, cheerleaders cannot practice more than six hours per week once school begins. Practices will be cut down to three days.  Shortly after the season begins, cheer practices will be moved indoors to Wood End Elementary School.  Practices cannot begin before 6:00 PM as the schools are being used until then.  Practices days/times will vary based on number of teams.  Attendance to in-season practices is much more strict.  As teams move to prepare for competitions, it is imperative to have all cheerleaders at all practices.  Repeated unexcused absences could result in the removal from the team.

Competitions:  Northeastern Massachusetts Pop Warner associations will be guaranteed at least two cheer competitions, with the possibility of making the Regional Competition and National Competition.  The League Competition will occur during early October and the NEMPWC Competition will occur at the end of October.  These competitions are typically held on Saturdays and held locally.  If teams qualify for the New England Regional Competition, it is usually held in early November.  In years past, this competition has also been held in Massachusetts.  Top 1 and 2 finishers at Regionals qualify for the Pop Warner National Cheer and Dance Competition in Florida.  This competition is typically held the first and second week of December.  If teams qualify for Nationals, additional fundraising will be done to help defray the cost.

Uniforms:  Reading Pop Warner will provide cheerleaders with a competition uniform (top, bottom, and cheer bow).  Athletes will be required to purchase competition cheer sneakers (brand and style determined by Cheer Director).  Practice uniforms will consist of black "cheer shorts" and a red, black, or white top).  Cheerleaders will have the option to purchase a Reading Pop Warner warm-up suit.  Game uniform will be determined by Cheer Director.

Hair/Makeup/Jewelry:  Cheerleaders hair will be required to be in a "high ponytail" for all practices, games, and competitions.  Some makeup may be required for competitions.  As a Pop Warner rule, no jewelry of any kind (except religious or medical medallions which must be secured to the body without a chain under apparel) will be worn at practices, games, or competitions.
