U10 Rockets Come Up Short Against Burlington

Q1 saw Reading start on offense but unable to score on Burlington. On the next possession Burlington was able to scamper for a long run and score the Quarters sole TD. The XP was also good bringing the score to 7-0 Burlington. The remainder of the Q was a seesaw filled with a number of 4 and outs and defensive stands by both teams. The O-Line including Nick Marrangoni, Jake Evans and Kaden McNeice.....fought hard in the trenches and Devin Nicholas had a great open field tackle saving another long run and TD by Burlington.

Q2 opened with a broken up pass in the endzone by Jacob Bradshaw but unfortunately on the following play Burlington was able to punch it in for a TD bringing the score to 13-0 in favor of the home team. The XP was denied when Max Donegan stormed in for the defensive tackle and also managed to strip the ball loose. With the XP no good Reading then took over on their own 35 yard line but turned the ball over on a tough snap. Burlington then proceeded to get back to back to back (to back) penalties that pushed them to 2nd and forever (46) and the Reading "D" again forced them to punt from deep in their own territory. Reading then had another 4 & out and Burlington took over on the Reading 48 yard line. Jacob Bradshaw had another great open field tackle on the first down but on the next play Burlington handed the ball off to the left and saw the ball carrier take it 40+ yards all the way to the Reading 2 yard line before being tackled by Ty Nicholas who came across the entire field to make the TD saving tackle. A false start pushed Burlington back to the 7 yard line to make it 3rd and long. A quick slant pass by Burlington produced zero yardage when Max Donegan read the play quickly and immediately put the WR on his back. Facing 4th and long Burlington was able to sneak the ball in again and the score went to 19-0. The XP was again stopped short. With the clock ticking down Reading coaches pulled the rabbit out of the hat with a well executed reverse that saw Kobe Johnson lay a solid block on a defender which opened a running lane for Ty Nicholas and allowed him to run 55 yards for a TD. The XP was unsuccessful and we headed into the half with some momentum and the score Burlington 19 and Reading 6.

The start of Q3 began with the Rockets blasting off on "D" when a fumble by Burlington was recovered by Callan Mackey. Dylan Hilaire then ran the ball for 17 yards including a great cutback that left a Burlington defender standing alone with no one to tackle. Reading could not score on the drive and eventually threw an interception. However Burlington could not capitalize on the good field position again given the Rockets defense with a tackle for a loss by Callan Mackey and another on the next play by Will Alberts. Brendan Boutiette and Max Donegan then stuffed the gap on a run and kept the Quarter scoreless as we headed into Q4 with Burlington still ahead 19-6.

Burlington had an early drive in Q4 that saw them march to the Reading 2 yard line. On 3rd and 2 Brendan Boutiette and Chase Williams combined to sack the QB and force a 4th and 7 and again kept the home team from the endzone. Another Rocket drive came up short and Burlington was able to take over on the Reading 32 yard line. A quick screen pass saw Burlington score another TD putting them up on top of Reading 25-6. A blocked XP (with Jack Currier coming up with the ball) kept the score there for the remainder of the game as our Rockets drop to 2-4 on the season and look forward to the home crowd for the next game.

Special thanks to our Cheerleaders (I'm remiss for not including them sooner) and for their unwavering dedication, support and enthusiasm. Every game. Every time. They are there and are incredibly appreciated.
