U10 Football Battles Woburn in Tough Loss

Reading’s Pop Warner season kicked off with a hard fought and close loss on Sunday morning. It was the inaugural game for all players on the team. Every player should be proud of their effort in their very first game. After allowing a touch down on Woburn’s first possession, the Reading offense roared into action. The first carry of the season went to #35 Charlie Donegan for a nice gain up the right side to get things started. #2 Michael Millerick capped off the drive with a 50+ yard run on a QB keep breaking numerous tackles all the way into the end zone for the first Reading touchdown of the season.

The Reading defense began to find their stride with standout tackles from #15 Aiden Griffen, # 33 Liam Mclauchlan, and #10 Sean Boutiette. #84 Blake Sampson stopped an almost certain Woburn touchdown by ending a huge Woburn gain up the sideline. The Woburn drive was eventually stopped short of the goal line thanks to the strong defensive plays from #1 Austin Williams and #9 Charlie Savio.

The Reading offense fought for yards behind multiple strong runs from #20 Liam St. Hillaire, #66 Nick Russo, and #35 Charlie Donegan.

Back on defense #90 Michael Lafferty tackled Woburn for a big loss on a missed snap. #77 Jacob Barletta forced a Woburn fumble that was recovered by #83 Gavin Annunziata.  Reading moved the chains with a #35 Charlie Donegan spin move run and #2 Michael Millerick carry and cutback to make it into the red zone, but Reading was stopped short of scoring before Halftime. The Halftime energy was supplied by the Reading Rocket Cheerleading squad and their well-executed cheering routines.

The second half started with a spectacular scoring drive from the Rockets. Strong blocks by #15 Aiden Griffen #5 John Arnold, #75 Dominic Leo helped free up holes for #35 Chris Donegan, #1 Austin Williams and #2 Michael Millerick. #20 Liam St. Hillaire beat the defense to the outside for the Touch Down dragging a would-be tackler into the endzone for the score.

It was all defense from here with #46 Cam Conwell tackling a blazing Woburn runner on the sideline stopping a huge gain. #66 Nick Russo broke through and tackled Woburn for a loss. #3 Roy Gilbair stopped a big gain after Woburn completed a pass and reversed field. Strong tackles by #77 Jacob Barletta, #66 Nick Russo, #90 Michael Lafferty, and #20 Liam St. Hillaire ended the Woburn drive in time for one last chance at offense. As a last-ditch effort for a scoring play to try to win the game #2 Michael Millerick aired the ball out downfield in the direction of #77 Jacob Barletta but the Woburn defense broke up what would have been a long completion.
