Reading Red U12 Loses a Tough Game to Saugus

Reading lost a tough match Sunday morning against Saugus for the 1st home loss. The Rocket’s were excited to welcome back Jack Murphy as quarterback and they scored on his opening drive with a rushing touchdown from Brady Scott. Saugus blocked the extra point.

Reading’s starting defense included Ben Diemer, Jared Settipane, Mikey Zapach, Cam Harrigan, Shea Healey, Riley Learned, Bobby Morris, Ryan Fitzgerald, Brady Anderson and Jakob Maher. Defense played strong on the opening drive throwing a couple of gang tackles. Diemer was particularly tough having individual back to back tackles to end downs. Reading faced a face mask penalty on the 4th down which pushed Saugus forward 15 yards and forced a new set of downs. Matty O’Malley had a big tackle to slow the drive but Saugus was successful and scored on a running touchdown. Cam Harrigan stopped the extra point from heading to the end zone.

Maher grabbed the kick return and gained a few yards on his run. Murphy had a bullet of a completed pass to Benson who gained 5 additional yards and earned Reading a new set of downs. The offense wasn’t able to convert and the field turned over on downs.

Saugus was successful in their second offensive drive. Diemer, Zapach and Fitzgerald all contributed in tackles to slow their march. Saugus earned a touchdown and was successful in converting the extra point.

Reading answered back quickly with a successful third drive. Murphy threw a huge pass to Benson and he hauled it in to the end zone. Reading was unsuccessful in converting the extra point and went into halftime, 13-12 Saugus.

Morris opened the second half with a solid tackle on the kick return but Saugus was strong in their adjustments to hold the Rockets and continue to score. Diemer, Settipane, Fiore, Learned and Zapach all had tackles in the Saugus scoring drive. Saugus added a touchdown but was not successful in gaining the extra point.

Reading’s first second half offensive attempt ended quickly based on a penalty and fumble on the first play. Reading responded by  forcing a turn of the field on downs for Saugus. Fitzgerald had back to back tackles and Matty O’Malley tossed one as well.

Reading stalled scoring but Murphy continued to throw the ball well with completed passes to Zapach and a PAT on 3rd down to Morris.

During Saugus’s next drive Benson had a tackle and Adrian Muniz had great holding to keep their offense from moving. Fiore was strong during this series with a deflection to break a pass attempt and a tackle for a 3rd down.

The field flipped to Reading without more points on the scoreboard.

Reading was not able to convert on their final two offensive drives. Highlights included completed passes by Murphy to Scott, Morris and Zapach. Saugus was able to nab one more touchdown with an extra point and the final score was 27-12.

Reading will play next weekend at home versus the East Boston Jets.
