U10 Rockets fall to the Sachems in a nail-biter

A crisp fall morning greeted the Reading U10 football boys and cheer girls on Sunday morning, as they faced an imposing Saugus line up who entered the matchup with an impressive 5-2 record.  Reading took the first possession and hit the field determined to take the game to their highly ranked opponents and imposing blocking by Devin Nicholas on the first play of the day saw the Saugus defense on their heels, which set up a 60 yard touch-down from Ty Nicholas who ran behind Jake Evans and the offensive line to give Reading an early lead.  The offensive line of Kaden McNeice, Bryce Doherty, Brendan Boutiette, Sam Albert, and Max Donegan sprang a Ty Nicholas loose for an extra point conversion to give the Rockets a 7-0 lead!  Saugus countered with a long and steady drive that combined a running game and passing attack that stretched Reading’s defense to the limits.  Huge tackles from Jake Evans, Callan Mackey, and Jared Frazier appeared to hold the Sachems at bay before Stephen O’Neil was able to push them back for loss.  But Saugus’ precise passing game allowed them to advance for the 6 points.  On the ensuing point after conversion, Cam Careirro and a swarming Reading defense smothered any chance of an extra point conversion and took a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter became a defensive battle with both sides turning the ball over on downs.  Readings defense rose the occasion and were constantly in Saugus backfield and gang tackling any Saugus ball carrier.  Kobe Johnson, Will Alberts, Sam Alberts were constantly around the ball and huge open field tackle stopped Saugus in their tracks to give the Rockets a 1 point advantage at half time.

During the half time break the crowd was thrilled by spirited cheers from both the Saugus and Reading cheer squads.

The defensive pressure continued after half time with Callan Mackey, Dylan Hillaire and Will Alberts all making big stops before Jake Evans threw his body on the line for an amazing first down saving tackle. The defensive battle continues and after a quick 4 and out by Reading, the defense went back to work and Chase Williams, Jay Turner and Jacob Bradshaw gang tackled the ball carrier to force a fumble recovered by Kaden McNeice, which set up an enthralling battle fourth quarter battle with Reading taking a  7-6  into the final stanza.

The fourth quarter lived up to expectations, Kobe Johnson, John Doherty, Jack Currier and Stephen O’Neil threw their bodies on the line to make critical defensive stops, before Saugus was able to take a 13-7 lead.  Reading countered immediately with a 60 yard touchdown run from Ty Nicholas which featured a well-executed double reverse play call that involved Tate Dolan, Adam Chevrie and Jared Frazier and Niko Ulman.  Ultimately Reading were unable to maintain their lead when Saugus unleashed their impressive passing game on the final drive despite some resolute defensive efforts from Nick Marragoni.

The brave Rockets came off second best to a vaunted opposition with w 13-19 loss, but lost no respect from their performance on the day.  Thanks to the cheer squad, friends, fans and family who came out to support them on the day.
