Reading U12 Red Holds on to Beat Woburn

Reading won their second straight home game this Sunday against neighboring rival Woburn. Reading began the game on defense lining up  Daniel Lewis, Ben Diemer, Riley Learned, Liam Benson, Jared Settipane, Shea Healey, Bobby Morris, Michael Zapach, James Donahue and Trevor Fiore. Woburn controlled the ball for the majority of the first halves minutes but was unsuccessful scoring.

Reading opened with solid defense.  Zapach, Diemer, Learned and Morris  combined on tackles during their first drive.  Woburn was successful in obtaining a new set of downs but penalties and Reading’s defensive line anchored by James Donahue and Daniel Lewis held Woburn in the middle. Settipane and Zapach combined on sack and Learned and Morris threw a joint tackle before the field changed hands.

Reading’s offense started with Brady Scott, John Irmer, Ben Peterson, James Donahue, Ryan Fitzgerald, Reily Learned, Matty O’Malley, Mason Moll, and Ben Diemer. O’Malley held a strong block which opened a running lane for Scott to have an 10 yard run. Reading had been in a loss for yards and were 5 yards short of earning a new set of downs. Reading was held in the middle before the drive ended on downs.

Fitzgerald opened Woburn’s second short lived scoring attempt with a solo tackle in motion. Woburn had 2 fumbles during the drive and punted on the 4th down.

Scott moved quickly up the middle on Reading’s second attempt one yard short of a first down. Deimer pushed through the Woburn defense to keep the drive moving. Reading followed with 2 passing plays by Scott at quarterback. An 8 yard completion was made to Peterson inside the 30. Scott ended the series with a running touchdown. Fitzgerald held the tee and Jakob Maher attempted a kick.

Scott was back on defense giving Woburn trouble to open their next drive.

Lewis held a huge block on the second down which prevented Woburn from moving. Fitzgerald broke Woburn’s pass attempt and Reading had less than a minute on the clock in the half with the score 6-0.

Reading started the second half on offense. Diemer, Fitzgerald  and Scott each moved the ball toward the end zone. Their was a great fake pass to Learned and Diemer hustled 20 yards on the play. Mason Moll and Adrian Muniz each had big blocks which created running room. Diemer barrel rolled into the end zone for Reading second touchdown. The offensive line had good blocking to hold Woburn back and Maher made a solid kick which was less than 2 yards short.

Woburn answered back on their next attempt and had a long successful drive.

Highlights on the defensive effort were O’Malley tipping off the ball and Muniz making a big tackle in the middle. Woburn gained confidence in their passing and kept the ball in the air. Morris and Fiore combined on a tackle and Donahue, Peterson and O’Malley joined together on one as well.  Reading suffered 2 penalties to help Woburn obtain  scoring position and Woburn ran for a TD, approaching the end of the 3rd quarter. Reading’s defense held off Woburn’s extra point with a particularly well placed block from Daniel Lewis to make room for Fitzgerald and Morris to complete a tackle.

Reading had a short-lived offensive march which ended with an interception to start the fourth quarter. Woburn’s next attempt was similarly short and the defensive highlights for Reading were from Morris, Diemer and Settipane.

Reading followed with another short lived series. Fitzgerald, Scott and Learned all had rushing yards. Reading moved back and forth and ended the series on downs.  Woburn controlled 6 of the last 7 minutes on the clock and were unsuccessful in scoring. Settipane combined with Morris on a sack and followed with a solo trouncing of Woburn’s QB. Woburn moved the ball in the air and was inside the 30 with under 2 left on the clock. Morris had a deflection followed by Scott making a game deciding interception with under 40 seconds left. Reading, now 3-2,  won 12-6 for the home crowd.
